Australia has massive import taxes on cars.

Sure, I get that but its still $113 grand for a domestic truck. Something we generally see as way overpriced to begin with.

So weird seeing the wheel on the right in those beasts. Methinks there might be a good market in Australia for secondhand full size trucks, I wonder how that would work. Buy them cheap here, ship them, have them converted, profit?

That’s a monstrous price tag.

Do you mean it’s $113,000 in the states also. That’s crazy money.

For that money I could have two well speced 3.2TDCi 6 speed manuals.

Are these rhd conversions? I didn’t think vehicles like these were officially sold in many places outside America and the demand in Australia surely wouldn’t justify a factory rhd model.

edit: Ford Oz doesn’t mention any pickups other than the Ranger so the Ford one must be a private import.

Today I learnt that; I can get an ARB bumper shipped from Oz, and immediately ship it and sell it back to Oz for cheaper than they can buy them over there.

Absolutely mad.

As far as I understand it’s illegal to register a LHD car (unless it’s a classic which gets special dispensation) in Australia. So I’ve been told.

There is a large market that converts them to RHD and still have the manufacturers warranty.

yeah 152k aud is 113 usd, but as fswede pointed out, these trucks would go for about half or less in the US

The Prime Minister of Australia is Malcolm Turnbull but the law has been there a while as they have RHD 1964 Ford Mustangs.

I like it as it makes sense for the road safety point of view but then again I don’t think it should be law.

Here in the U.K. we can order LHD or RHD new from a car dealership or just order a car from abroad/buy a lott car/second hand car and import and register it.

But they’re not domestic trucks...

The are expensive because they are typically the fully loaded versions of the truck to begin with...and then they are locally converted to RHD using components that generally have to be custom fabricated either in Oz or in Asia. And the warranties have to be supported by the converter not the manufacturer.

At this stage the only marquee that is supporting the local conversion is FCA with the new RAM which makes them a little cheaper and provides dealer support as well.

The fanny daft thing is they are only 3/4 tonne trucks. Most of the light trucks you Americans call ‘small trucks’ that we already have on the market here are load rated for more than that (typically 700 to 900kg for a dual cab and 80 to 1200 kg for a single cab).

Where they do have a niche is in their tow capacity...and this is why they are the fully loaded bingo bling versions as they are purchased by cashed up baby boomer bogans to tow their shiny fifth wheel carahouses around the countryside.

Yeah I remember years ago when the f250 first arrived there people complained because it had lower capacity than the utes...That’s because it came over with an old i6 and the rating don’t translate. If these trucks were rated with the same method as other trucks, their numbers would be a lot higher I’d guess.

Hey there, this may be the wrong place to ask this, but I have a trip report I’d like to post on here on the Overland kinja? What do I need to do to post it?

Thanks!

Great video, thanks for sharing. Interesting perspective. I think one thing we lose sight of with these trucks is that they really are quite capable off-road, so long as they fit on the trails.
